Use of fossil fuels: coal, oil, natural gas. Increasing urbanization: megacities around the world. Increasing growth of population increased use of natural resources generally. Stage 1: high bbirth rate, high early death rate. Stage 3: declining birth rate, low death rate. Span over which transition occurs highly variable. Indicators of change and crisis -1: depletion of the ozone layer; the antarctic ozone hole, the bad and the good. Ozone molecules protect life against uv-b radiation. Uv-b increases skin cancer, cataracts, and affect immune system. More than 1 million cases of skin cancer a year. 1 in 5 americns will develop some form of skin cancer during their lifetime.
