Stress Lecture 19
Sleep deprivation over activates amygdala, increases activity
Hippocampus suffers
Amygdala fires and goes to cingulate
Goes to emotional part of brain
Cingulate talks to decision making (prefrontal/frontal cortex)
Gives weak signal back to cingulate, weak signal back to amygdala
Amygdala sends info to hypothalamus
Sends activation down spinal cord, sends sympathetic nerves
Pituitary is activated, secretes ACTH, activates adrenals, secretes cortisol
After sleep deprivation, higher levels of cortisol
Crying is parasympathetic, tears are like hormone release
Crying is recovery from stress
As cortisol levels continually rise, mood worsens
Higher risk of depression for high responders
Twin study to see if experience causes change (PTSD) or predisposed
physiology
Smaller hippocampal size to begin with
Smaller hippocampus has less of a chance of inhibiting amygdala
firing
5-HTT is a serotonin transporter “the depression gene”
SSRIs inhibit serotonin recycling

Document Summary

Sleep deprivation over activates amygdala, increases activity. Cingulate talks to decision making (prefrontal/frontal cortex) Gives weak signal back to cingulate, weak signal back to amygdala. Sends activation down spinal cord, sends sympathetic nerves. Pituitary is activated, secretes acth, activates adrenals, secretes cortisol. After sleep deprivation, higher levels of cortisol. Crying is parasympathetic, tears are like hormone release. As cortisol levels continually rise, mood worsens. Higher risk of depression for high responders. Twin study to see if experience causes change (ptsd) or predisposed physiology. Smaller hippocampus has less of a chance of inhibiting amygdala firing. 5-htt is a serotonin transporter the depression gene . Maybe people with depression don"t have enough dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. You can inherit long allele or short allele. Stress, environment, life circumstance also influence depression. Short alleles only need a small input to freak out over something. Collectivist cultures is the good of all over the good of yourself.
