● Cortisol makes salmon migrate
○ If you take out ability to secrete cortisol, they don’t return home
● Older people don’t enter stage 4 sleep
○ Also don’t get as much REM
○ Old people don’t need as much sleep
● Children have lots of deep sleep bc brains are developing
● As you age, cortisol levels rise
○ High cortisol levels disrupt sleep
■ Why you get don’t get as much deep sleep
● Feedback loop
○ Usually you have a rise in cortisol, a stress response, and then cortisol levels
feedback to hypothalamus and stop producing cortisol
