Body as an anatomical-pathological fact is not universal. Separation of mind and body is not universal; historically recent! The human body is an imitation of heaven and earth in all its details. How we see, what we see, and what we do to our bodies. Norma and norman- the average american female and male . We live in a world full of body images. Though we often treat body images as representations of truth , all images convey partial info/truth. Partial truth shaped by cultural and personal meanings and understandings of each individual producer and viewer. Multiple points of view contribute to truth that is constantly being rewritten. 3 ways the body can be viewed. Understand outside the world through human consciousness. Applies focus diverse ways by various medical traditions. Used representationally as natural symbol with which to think about society, nature, and culture. Control of bodies (individual/ collective) in reproduction/sexuality, in work/leisure, in sickness/other forms of human difference.
