1. What are marine reptiles?
a. Marine Tetrapods
i. four-limbed vertebrates that re-invaded the sea
ii. Acanthostega in water
iii. Seymouria on land
iv. Some came from the water onto the land and others came from land and
returned to the water (a lot of land mammals and reptiles)
b. Factors of marine animals (what makes them marine)
i. Feeding in the sea and what they eat
1. they rely on the sea
2. May swim in the sea
a. Some may only walk and not swim, not necessary to swim
3. Not necessary to give birth in the sea (sea turtles)
4. Do not have to spend the majority of time in the sea (sea lions)

a. Modern groups

1. Cannot leave the sea

1. Spend most of the time on land
b. In the past
i. Sauropterygians
1. Placodontia
a. looks like turtles
b. Flat
2. Eosauropterygia
a. Gave rise to plesiosauria
i. Most of them had long necks
ii. The rest had short necks
1. they were the worst in the water
2. Could be more than 10m long
3. Skull could be up to 3m long
4. Teeth are massive, bigger than t. Rex teeth
ii. Ichthyosaurs
1. Went into the sea looking like a lizard and soon became fish
shaped
