Includes practical goals; things we want to achieve. Ex: word choice (may sound more professional in office, but use slang with friends) A message is not sent or received in isolation. Sender - person who transmits the message. Channel - method used to deliver the message. This model recognizes additional contexts that affect communication. Social context - refers to social norms that guide communication choices in certain situations. But with friends, you may interrupt them & talk more freely. Ex: may communicate at a distance (ex: email) if you have a weak relationship w/ other person. Cultural context - learned behaviors that refer to the learned behaviors of a specific culture. Ex: some cultures prefer direct communication, while others are more indirect. But most we engage in communication w/o much thought.
