CMN 3 Lecture 7: Lecture 7: Perceptions and Needs
Document Summary
Process through which we interpret our experiences and come to our unique understandings. Effects how we communicate and how we understand others. We selected information to interpret by using schemas. Schemas: mental structures that help us put together bits of information to form patterns and create meaning. Help us understand and anticipate how things would work. Changes over time as you have new experiences. Encounters a sphynx cat for first time and it is hairless leads to assimilation and accommodation in schemas. Assimilation: new information is incorporated into an existing schema. Accommodation: existing schemas might be altered or new schemas are formed as you learn new info and have new experiences. Schemas are useful shortcuts to interpreting info and used commonly-- there are challenges to using schemas. Contribute to stereotypes because we use schemas to make assumption based on our pre- existing knowledge. Lead us to jude events based on info that is most stand out to us.
