Personality- relatively distinct and consistent ways of thinking, feeling, and acting. Cattell 16 personality factor test measures 16 traits (such as shyness, outgoing/reserved, emotional stability, intelligence, submissiveness, etc) Minnesota multiphasic personality inventory (mmpi) measures negative factors such as depression, hysteria, paranoia. Personality is determined by how successful this striving is: trait models (ex. Allport)- personality can be described as a set of traits or characteristics like introversion/extroversion. Personality is determined by which traits are dominant. Sigmund freud (1856-1939)- austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, a clinical method for treating psychopathology (psychological disorders) Tendency to maximize instinctual gratification while minimizing punishment and guilt. Survival instincts: easily satisfied; plays little role in personality. Sexual instincts: not easily satisfied; is largely responsible for personality. Id- attempts to satisfy instincts by means of the pleasure principle (safety instincts, don"t be concerned with anything else) Superego- encodes rules and moral standards of society.
