The psychodynamic perspective: the structure of personality, three independent, interacting, and often conflicting systems. Superego: the innermost core of the personality, present at birth, exists totally within the unconscious mind, operates according to the pleasure principle. Source of all psychic energy: ego, has direct contact with reality, develops second, after id, exists primarily at the conscious level, operates according to the reality principle. Last to develop: moral arm of personality, traditional values and ideals of family and society, blind quest for moral perfection. Strives to control the impulses of the id. Id"s pleasure-seeking tendencies are focused on specific pleasure-sensitive areas of the body: erogenous zones, personality formed by age 6 through these crucial experiences. Fixation: a state of arrested psychosexual development.
