BCS 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Electrodermal Activity, Simple Features, Change Blindness
Document Summary
For simple features, we have feature maps form our sensory system. Combing features, however, requires attention/memory to check both properties at once. Only some of it is relevant to what we are trying to do. We are limited in how much we can attend to. Some questions we can ask about the unattended channel: Cherry"s evidence led broadbent to suggest that attention is like a filter. Attention acts as a selective filter, and it selects early . We use the basic sensory features to decide what to tune out. And then the unattended channel is not processed beyond these basic sensory (physical) properties. All higher-level processing (e. g. meaning) occurs post-filter: Information in the unattended channel should not be comprehended by the listener. After hearing their own name, participants are much more likely to report hearing the stop instructions (unattended channel) Sometimes the text would switch ears without warning. Participants attention would temporarily jump to the unattended ear!
