NUR 416 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Posterior Fontanelle, Fontanelle, Immunoglobulin A
Document Summary
Infancy is the time of most rapid physical & developmental growth. Weight: doubles by 6 months, triples by 1 year. Length: increases by 50% by 1 year. Head circumference: increases by 30% by 1 year, posterior fontanelle closes around 2 months, anterior fontanelle closes around 12-18 months. Fontanelle/soft spot will depress in if baby is dehydrated. Maturation of posture, head control, sitting, creeping, standing & walking. Fine motor: 1 month: grasping reflex, 3 months: hold object, 5 months: grasps object voluntarily, 7 months: transfers object from one hand to the other, 9 months: pincer grasp, 12 months: puts objects in container. Close proximity of trachea to bronchi, short, straight eustachian tubes, small airways & immature immune system predisposes to respiratory infections. Smaller airways with fewer alveoli increase risk for respiratory distress with even mild infections. Decreased digestive enzyme activity: human milk has properties to compensate for this, allowing the infant to receive optimum nutrition.
