BIO 310 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: New York Botanical Garden, Panicle, Western Honey Bee
Document Summary
Rice takes about 3-6 months to grow to maturity and depends heavily on environmental conditions. There are three major phases that they go through: vegetative, reproductive, ripening. In the reproductive stage, it begins with the rice plant containing a bulge of the leaf stem, that reveals the developing panicle, called the booting" stage. The tip of the developing panicle emerges from the stem and continues to grow. The heading stage" follows, where the panicle is fully visible. Then, flowering begins one day after the heading" stage is complete. The flowers open to shed their pollen on one another so that pollination can occur. More specifically pollination in rice usually occurs through self-pollination, by wind, and insects are not involved. There are many studies that are doing hybrid rice to try and withstand the harsh conditions that it needs to grow in. This is one of many adaptations that people have used to improve pollination of rice.
