Heuristics = decision making rules or principles used to make quick/ easy. Fallacies & biases = errors or distortions that crop up in the way people process conclusions or inferences social info. Both minimize information overload and speed up the decision process. They may be helpful or harmful to objectivity. Some have added a post formal operational stage: relying only on previous thinking, even in new situations. As adults, we are able to think at the highest formal or abstract level, but we don"t bother and rely on past (now possibly biased) thinking. Make best guess based on similarity to typical patterns or general types. Assumes people fit neatly into a relatively few clear cut categories. Example: if she looks like a librarian, she is probably quiet, intelligence, serious, and unpopular. More readily information carries more weight than it necessarily should. Which is more common in english, words that start with k or words with k as third letter.
