Psychological contract: informal expectations of the employer and what they have of us. Current trend is from long-term relational (development, loyalty) to short-term transactional contracts (explicit requirements are filled) Notions about what constitutes effective job performance and what qualities define a valuable worker are changing. From stable environment (need individuals to be able to perform specific tasks) to dynamic environment (need individuals capable of adapting to new demands, learning new skills) Framework for considering how individuals and organizations make decisions about retention. Attraction: applicants are drawn to an organization they like for a variety of reasons. Selection: individuals are recruited and selected who are believed to fit with an organization. Attrition: individuals who do not fit with organization voluntarily or involuntarily leave. Child focus on self, less consideration of others. Student focus on learning, improvement of self.
