Document Summary
How are teams and groups similar: composed of multiple members (2 or more individuals, members are interdependent (connected, members share collective goals and identities (social relationships) When should teams be used in place of individuals: difficult tasks: more individuals with more knowledge/effort helps, complex tasks: more individuals can help perform simultaneous events, important/consequential tasks: more individuals can help make problematic or important decisions. Members and subgroups can have unique task responsibilities. Members work on all aspects of the team task. Performance depends on team accomplishing single overall task. Produce a lot or quickly maximizing task. No objective standard for best" performance - producing more (or more quickly) is always better. Ex. selling products, scoring points in a game. Correct or optimal standard for best" performance -- meeting or getting as close to standard as possible is better. Additive task - sum" member efforts to yield team performance. Performance takes into account work from all members equally.
