Unequal treatment, consideration, or favoring of individuals based on a group, class, or category to which they belong rather than on individual merit. Discrimination on the basis of purposeful differential treatment towards one individual/group: intentional acts that impose different standards on different groups of people, practices that disadvantage one person/group relative to others. Displays preferential treatment to men and/or childless applicants. Ex: discriminatory action: offering training on new software only late at night after regular business hours. Displays preferential treatment for employees with no/few domestic responsibilities. Bona fide occupational qualification (bfoq: characteristic such as sex, religion, or national origin that is required or necessary to effectively do the job. Organizations can attempt to argue that certain employee characteristics are imperative. Bfoqs can not be based on race or skin color. Ex: policy-making positions at a catholic hospital to be catholic. Actor to play a role from a certain country.
