Nature and functions of the family: survival of offspring families help ensure children survive to maturity by attending to their physical needs, health, and safety most fundamental. From an evolutionary perspective: survival of gene pool: economic function provide means for children to acquire the skills and other resources necessary to be economically productive in adulthood. Teaching trade like carpentry, teaching how to run a farm. Now, in us: providing education to be successful: cultural training and socialization more broadly teach basic values of their culture. Socialization teach kids how to be people and live in the world. Influence of parental socialization: socialization process through which children acquire values, standards, skills, knowledge, and behaviors that are regarded as appropriate to present and future roles in culture, parents are: Direct instructors explicitly teach children skills, rules, and strategies and provide advice. Indirect socializers transmit skills, rules, and attitudes in course of everyday interactions w/ their children.
