PSY 302 Chapter Notes - Chapter 12: Parenting Styles, Tv Tonight, Child Care
Document Summary
What is considered a family varies across individuals and cultures. Some cases; includes several generations and married siblings living together, in some cases; just a single parent living alone with his or her children. No matter what their structure or size, families in all societies serve several functions related to child rearing: survival of offspring. Families help to ensure that children survive to maturity by attending to their physical needs, health, and safety: economic function. Families provide the means for children to acquire the skills and other resources that they will need to be economically productive in adulthood: cultural training. Families teach children the basic values of their cultures. The first function is the most fundamental: the goals of the economic and cultural functions are of little importance if children do not survive. Family dynamics- the way in which the family operates as a whole. No member of a family function in isolation.
