PSYC 353 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Panic Attack, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder
Document Summary
The main feature of panic disorder is panic attack. 4-5% of population will have a panic disorder sometime during their lives, but 2-3% will have a panic disorder witihin a given year. Need to have four of the synpotms that were displayed before. According to disorder- need to have repeated and unexpected panic attacks. Complication or loss of control during one of the attacks, might fear being away from home- can lead to agoraphobia. Seem to come from nowhere, but usually the first attack comes from somewhere (loss, trauma) Those with panic attacks are more sensitive- have more anxiety and depression, but less anxiety/depression than clinical examples. Its unpredictable, but for phobia you know what situation would cue it and can avoid it if you need it. At least three of the following: restlessness, on edge, keyed up, easily fatigued irritability, difficulty concentrating, blanking out, muscle tension. Hardest to treat because it is pervasive and diffuse.
