Threats in the environment that were posed by chemical substances. Arsenic (id term: 19th c. main ingredient. Use becomes more widespread and becomes more perfuse in environment. Using in manufactured goods: soaps, fabrics, candles, candies. Used because of the color and used as a pigment: color green: wallpaper. Middle of 1800s- people start to realize that there is arsenic exposure from wallpaper. Medical profession as a whole did not think that it was harmful so little was done to fix the problem. Any ill affects from exposure had to have been from long-term chronic exposure: could take months or years to take affect. Why was wallpaper such a problem: breathing in flecks as the wallpaper aged and became wrinkled or as people rubbed against it, particles would get inhaled by people.
