Growth of large cities increased environmental health problems. Issues with sewage, providing drinking water, dealing with garbage. Toxic substance: arsenic (19th century) - id term. As a poison designed to have ill effects on people. Becomes an environmental health issue in the 19th century - because its use becomes more wide spread. Used as an ingredient in manufactured goods. Used because of it"s color when added to these goods. Pigment in the goods and green dyes that were sold. Wallpaper: identified early on as a potential source of arsenic toxicity in the environment. Paris green was one of the pigments in the wall paper. In hindsight, its tough to know the ill effects of wallpaper. About middle of 1800s, people began to identify wallpaper as a source of arsenic exposure. 1850s, people wrote articles about wallpaper being hazardous. British article lansett - ran campaign to ban arsenic.
