Document Summary

In order to interact with objects in an appropriate fashion, children need to learn what it"s used for & how it is used. Around 12 mo of age, infants" object play changes from simple exploration & manipulation to a form of play that involves functional knowledge. By 14 mo s, infants bring diff objects to the correct target area using an appropriate grip. Participants: 283 (!) infants btwn 6 & 16 mo of age. Short clips in which a model acted on 3 objects (cup, phone, brush) either in a functional or non- functional way, seen many times in a row. For 2 of the object goal combinations, infants anticipated the target area more when observing a functional compared to a nonfunctional action. In the non-functional condition, infants did not adapt to the atypical use of the object. This holds for infants as young as 6 mo who do not yet display this knowledge in their behavior.
