Document Summary

Species richness the number of species present. Evenness the relative abundance of the species. Species richness increases with the area that you survey. The larger an area is, the more habitats there are. The more types of habitats you have, the more specialized and varied species you will find. Ecologists noticed that there are more species of each type of organisms in the tropics than there are at the poles. Most clear when you look at it on maps. Potential hypotheses for the cause of the gradient: Seasons are hard to handle and there is far more seasonality in the temperate zones than the tropics. Problem: there are equal number of species in the tropical areas that have high variability of rainfall across the year. The tropics has more resources so it can provide for a lot of different species. There are more tropical species because there"s tighter niche packing.
