Document Summary

Abominable mystery the sudden appearance of relatively modern flowers pose a problem to the theory of evolution. Fossils of archaefructus show that they were herbaceous aquatic shrubs. Had male and female structures on pre flowers because it has no petals or sepals. Probably relied on water to transfer pollen to stigmas. Flowers are hermaphroditic but only one sex develops fully and is fertile. Entirely composed of water plants with extraordinarily showy flowers. No vessel cells because they live in water. Root in sediments in shallow water and have extended leaf and flower stems. Stomata are on the tops of the leaves so they"re above the water line. Star anise: dried fruits that come from a small evergreen tree (plant that doesn"t lose its leaves). We use them in fresh water aquariums because they are high oxygen producers. Good protection for small fish and snails. Magnolias: typically have trimerous flowers (3 sepals 3 petals).
