BIO 200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 27: Galium, Arthur Tansley, Intraspecific Competition
Document Summary
Biotic interactions: some phenotypic changes increase fitness. Competition: competition is often difficult to see in nonhuman species, hard to measure, ghost of competition past : major competition usually occurred in the past. We can only measure the evidence that they were once competing. Example: robert maccarthur"s warblers: arthur tansley tested the idea that competition occurs naturally, questioned reason behind niches. Can one species not survive in the other"s niche: examined galium saxatile and galium pumilum. When each plant species is allowed to grow alone, they grow on both types of soil: excellent growth on home soil, moderate growth on other soil. When the plants grow together, they only grow on their home soil: each has a competitive edge in home environment, they exclude each other. Types of competition: exploitation: one species lowers the resources of another, examples: food, territory, mates, etc, contact is not necessary.
