Lec 29 outline: defensive: a defends b in exchange for s/t (usually food/maybe protection, cleaner fish and customer fish- cleaners feed on ectoparasite/bac on customer [cleaners get nutrients; customers get protection] Eyelash mite- eat human eye salts (protect against eyes gluing shut) Epiphytic orchids- orchids grow high on trees for light, tree doesn"t care: ammensalism -/0 usually accidental. Saguaro and palo verde- baby saguaro gets shade under palo verde nurse plant (plant that helps others) [commensal] As baby grows taller- becomes competitor to nurse plant. Oxpecker birds- cling onto grazers to pick off parasites/scabs for blood/etc (relationship undefined depending on cost/benefits/intentions) Communities formed from group of species interactions: stability is key. Keystone species: critical for holding delicate ecosystem together. Sea star- top pred in habitat and eat mollusks (1 mollusk species would dom and kill all others w/o sea stars)
