BIO 200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Convergent Evolution, Blubber, Keratin
Document Summary
Mammals (smallest of vertebrates: the age of mammals, mammals share five traits, certain mammals have some pretty cool derived traits, there are three groups of mammals. Ancient mammals were mostly small, shrew-like, insectivorous, arboreal(confined to trees) and nocturnal (large eye sockets) Mammals likely survived the extinction of the dinosaurs due to endothermy. Survuved b/c of insulating fur and rapid metablism. Loss due to being very large & predominance of humans. Mammals are unified by five traits: hair. Hair is also often used as a camouflage. Some have both an under-coat and upper coat. Milk changes as infant grows: endothermy (homoplasious in mammals and birds. Can control their body temp: sweat glands. Allows for developing babys blood to come into close contact w/ mothers blood. Mammals have symbionts that allow them to digest cellulose. Mammals have used keratin to develop hooves(keep the bones from shattering) and horns.
