Mammals: the age of mammals, mammals share five traits, certain mammals have some pretty cool derived trait, there are two groups of mammals. Egg-laying mammals: size variation among mammals. Blue whale: largest marine mammal and largest animal on earth. Believed to be nocturnal as seen by very large eye sockets. Likely survived extinction of dinosaurs due to endothermy (can keep themselves warm due to metabolism and fur) Dramatic climate changes: some mammals are extinct. May have gone extinct due to rising dominance of humans: five mammalian traits, hair (including various roles of hair) Helps mammals inhabit areas that ectotherms can"t live in. Blubber also help mammals keep warm (whales, dolphins) Help cats avoid colliding with objects in the dark. Females have specialized structures that produce milk. Critical for developing young in need of energy: endothermy. Allowed mammals to survive in extreme environments. More efficient blood circulation (four-chambered heart) efficient oxygen delivery higher metabolic rates associated with endothermy.
