BIOL 221 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Viscosity, Bronchus, Bronchoconstriction

Resistance to Airflow
Airflow = Δ pressure / resistance
Resistance
inversely related to airway radius
contraction causes constriction
Think Spot:
What is the effect of decreased airway radius on resistance? on
airflow?
What is the effect of increased airway radius on resistance? on
airflow?
Like blood flow (see Topic 4), airflow is based on the pressure gradient
divided by resistance.
Resistance is related to size (radius* [r] and length) of the air
passageways and viscosity of the “fluid”, which in this case is very low.
Resistance opposes airflow and is inversely related to airway radius
(½ diameter).
