Document Summary

Ability of organisms to reproduce their own kind- key characteristic of life. Cell division is used for: reproduction of single celled organisms, growth of multicellular organisms from a fertilized egg into an adult, repair and replacement of cells, production of sperm and eggs. Prokaryotes: reduce by binary fission (dividing in half) Chromosomes of prokaryote is typically single circular dna molecules associated with proteins and much smaller than those of eukaryotes. Binary fission occurs in 3 stages: duplication of chromosomes and separation of copies, elongation of cell and movement of the copies, division into 2 daughter cells. Eukaryotic cells are more complex and larger; have more genes; most genes are stored on multiple chromosomes in nucleus. Each eukaryotic species has a characteristic number of chromosomes in each cell nucleus. Eukaryotic cells are composed of chromatin: one long dna molecule and proteins that help maintain the chromosome structure and control the activity of its genes.
