An individuals conceptualization about one thinks about himself or herself. Can be affected by a decline in activity tolerance or dif culty managing a chronic illness. Nurses have a responsibility to assess clients for a negative self-concept and to identify the possible causes in order to help them develop more positive view of themselves. Four dimensions of self-concept - involves all the self perceptions - appearance, values, and beliefs - that influence behavior and are referred to when using the words i or me. Self knowledge - insight in one"s own abilities, nature, and limitations. Self-expectation - what one expects of oneself; may be realistic or unrealistic expectations. Social self - how a person is perceived by others and society. Social evaluation - appraisal of oneself in relationship to others, events, or situations. A person isn"t born with self-concept, it develops as a social interaction with others.
