Deviance is relative to time place and culture. What is considered deviant in one society may not be deviant in another society. Deviance is behavior that a considerable number of people view as beyond the limits of tolerance. Statistical deviance: something that varies too widely from the average. Anomie: normlessness or a weak connection between the cultural goals of a society. Early theories though that deviance was biological in nature. Criminal behavior measured based on a person"s physical characteristics. Argued gender and age played a role in criminal activity. Differential association theory: individuals learn deviant and criminal behavior from associating with deviance and criminals. Social learning theory: you learn from who you associate with. Subculture deviance: behavior through with a person deviates from the norms of the surrounding society by conforming to the norms of a subculture group. Merton"s/structural strain theory: structural roadblocks to culturally define goals lead to alternative and deviant means of achievement.
