Notions of race and racism were created to justify the enslavement of people of african descent that became the primary labor system of the early united states (flanagan article) In order to discuss issues of racial bias and prejudice with children and help them understand race and inequality in our society, caregivers must first be comfortable addressing these issues themselves. (winkler article) Teaching about race is controversial and inappropriate to teach. Racial literacy - describes a way of seeing and responding to the racial climate and racial structures. Someone who is racially literate can recognize and identify racism and is prepared to confront it. Important vocabulary: bias , stereotypes, institutional racism , prejudice , structural racism. When introducing racism to elementary students the focus should begin with concepts such as fairness, sharing and equality. By six months babies recognized racial differences.
