Kansas-nebraska bill 1854: purpose organize territories for transcontinental railroad, bill left the question of slavery to the people residing in those territories, bill contradicted the missouri compromise, bill became law with support from pres. Slavery, free soilers, and the birth of the republican party. New party spurred by northerners anger at kn bill: free soilers, anti-slavery whigs, northern democrats and other reformers joined.
