Document Summary

Lecture 2 anatomy and physiology of speech + hearing mechanisms. I. source-filter theory (source being lungs/filter being lips and teeth); 4 portions of speech production. Respiratory: the power source: lungs, ribcage, and abdomen make up the thoracic cavity, the biological function of the thoracic cavity is for oxygen exchange, the secondary purpose is to create speech, vegetative (tidal/resting) breathing inhale. Muscles contract, thoracic cavity + lungs expand, volume of air inside increases, forms negative pressure in lungs + positive pressure out, muscles stop contracting, etc. Chest forces air out as it gets back to resting position: breathing for speech purposes. Exhalation uses abs, internal intercostals, and other muscles in neck, back, + chest. Biological function: prevents shit from entering lungs + expels foreign substances from lungs when they do enter speech. Secondary function: to vibrate vocal folds and set air in motion to create sound for: there are two pipes in the throat.
