Document Summary
Lecture notes (based on the assigned reading) 11/3/16. Reading: author makes the case that the american masculine ethos was on the frontier. American public didn"t know why the soldiers were in vietnam in the first place. When the soldiers came home, people were very disrespectful to them. They were called baby killers because of the footage that went home to america. (which included innocent children being murdered in vietnam by american soldiers) Many had post traumatic stress disorder when they came home. Several men"s movements popped up once the soldiers came home, of which provided the emotional outlet and the community that the disillusioned soldiers needed. They were driven to take back the authority that they lost to their wives who took over the working force while the soldiers were employed. World war ii was a form of social upheaval and the men felt victimized.
