While each corporation progresses differently, zadek proposes that five stages are common as corporations progress in civil learning". Two learning curves are involved: an organizational learning curve, a societal learning curve. Defensive: deny practices & responsibility, protect & defend reputation for the short term, it"s not our job to fix that. Compliant: following industry standards, mitigate erosion of economic value for the medium term, we"ll do just as much as we have to. Managerial: put issues into management process, prevent erosion & achieve longer term gains, it"s the business, stupid. Strategic: putting societal issue into core business practice, enhance long term value, it gives us a competitive edge. Civil: industry involvement, first mover, collective action, we need to make sure everybody does it. Emerging: political & media awareness, weak data, but emerging research, some businesses make changes. Consolidating: emerging business practices, voluntary initiatives, litigation, collective action.
