Importance of work to a society and importance of work to us. What keeps us from the type of work that we want to do: i. e gender can impact the choices that are available to us. As kids everyone asks us what we want to do when we grow up but we end up being confined. What are those limitations that get in the way: gender, age, race, ethnicity, location, history, time period. Political = power: political roadblocks prevent people from having types of jobs, certain groups have less power, who has power, who doesn"t have power, who gives us our power, we have to understand the culture itself first. Work is an underpinning of all social activity. Work is universally important in every society. Prestige/ status associated with different types of work: your job says a lot about you to people, it defines you to others, this is true is every society.
