What gets in the way of us doing what we really want to do: economical, political, etc. Work is the underpinning of all social activity. Work is universal; there"s no society that doesn"t work. The kinds of work that we do and the types of work that are valuable are always changing. Labor institution is like no other institution. Goes hand in hand with the political institution: if there aren"t any jobs, we look at the government. What we do for a living defines who we are. We"re expected to know what we want to do at the age of 16-17 when we"re filling out college applications. Never before have we seen such an overlap of professions as we do today due to changing gender roles. Introduction to the course: syllabus and course organization.
