Two approaches to stress: life events, major event in life, daily hassles, chronic, minor stressors we deal with everyday (e. g. , commuting, noise, etc ) Disease: can be caused by a virus, genetic factors, or an environmental condition. Illness/sickness: the unhealthy state caused by the disease. Sick role: people look for support and empathy from others when they are feeling ill. The life events model of stress and illness. Social readjustment rating scale (srrs: checklist of life events (positive and negative) Items on the scale are assigned a number of life change units based on people"s average responses to those events: examples: death of a spouse = 100, divorce = 73, marriage = 50. Rahe (1968): 2500 naval personnel completed the srss, do srss scores predict illness, result: people with higher srss scores had more illnesses during the first month at sea.
