Attention and recog pass sensory info into stm. Rehearsal used to maintain info in stm. Info can be copied from ltm back to stm and used later. Sensory mem holds raw info for short time. Stm holds 4-7 things for 15-30 secs: seat of consciousness, mediates ongoing tasks and holds current thoughts. Ltm holds unlimited info for unlimited amount of time. Retention of sensory info for brief time. Echoic memory auditory sensory memory syst; holds sounds for about 2s. George sperling: exp that intended to study recognition, but made discovery that proposed existence of sensory memory. C: subj may have recognized all of the letters, but few seconds needed to report letter may have faded from sensory mem. Partial report task 12 letters flashed again for 50 msec but only report back cued row: different pitched tones to differentiate between rows, delays of tones 0ms, 100ms, 300ms, 1000ms.
