PSY 240 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Gordon Allport, Naturalistic Observation, Design Of Experiments
Document Summary
The study of how individuals think, feel, and behave in a social context. Social in uence- the effect that the words, actions, or mere presence of other people have on our thoughts, feelings, attitudes, and behaviors. The power of the situation- failure to take the situation into account when making judgements, expressing attitudes, or behaving. The power of social interpretation- people"s behavior is in uenced by their interpretation of their social environment (mean waitress- could mean she has a sick child, got into a car accident, etc. ) Primary motivations: lead to how we process ourselves. Need to feel good about ourselves (to justify our passive behavior) Need to be accurate (desire and need to be correct) Often times, these two motivations are both at play. But, if we have to choose between the two, the rst is most likely to be chosen. Focus on the situation: focus is on individual in the context of a social situation.
