Bio 358, topic 1 + 2: the human story through the lens of evolutionary biology (1. 8 million years) Misunderstanding of natural selection: always slow time for accretion of genetic superiority . Can be very fast genetically depending on strength of selection and social behavior can be even faster: survival of the fittest means biggest, strongest. Benefit of the group or local population: there is no planning ahead by natural selection for the good of a species or local group, it is an in-the-moment process, it is individual risk, benefit and cost that matters. Conflict of interest problem: between members of the same species in a malthusian world. Humans: what is the same and what is different about us versus other non-human animals, staying within the understanding of evolution by natural by selection. Non-human animals: cultural information, genetic information, personal experience. Humans: cultural information mainly even though we have genetic information and personal experience affecting us.
