Bacteria that decompose plant material function in a soil ph level of above 4. 9. The ph range for isopods would be between 5. 5 to. 9 as ph of 9 is the maximum threshold for soil bacteria that decomposes plant material. Isopods also have gills and require water to obtain the oxygen they need to breathe (hofmeister et al, A previous experiment conducted in amsterdam had shown that the median of isopod ph preference ranged from 6 to 8 while actively avoiding extremely acidic conditions found in ph 2 or below (straalen, 1997).
