Motivation has a strong behavioral component and it is important for managers because it is one of the elements that affect performance. People are first motivated by the lower level needs. They won"t move onto the higher needs until the lower ones are met. Hygiene or extrinsic factors , does not lead to motivation; it only leads to the absence of dissatisfaction. States of inequity associated with the nature of the work itself achievement, recognition, challenging work, responsibility, and growth. Ex. offers opportunities to grow, our belief systems, values. Ex. working as a pharmacist; though it doesn"t make much money, you do it bc you"re helping ppl. All these factors need to be linked in order to have motivation.
