Document Summary

We refer to the known aspect of the self as the self concept - the contents of the self; that is, our knowledge about who we are. And to the knower aspect as self awareness (the act of thinking about ourselves) People develop a self concept at about age 2. According to self-regulatory resource model, self control is a limited resource. Example: don"t think about a white bear and then don"t laugh during a comedy movie. People who had to suppress white bear thoughts first had a harder time not laughing compared to those who didn"t have to suppress. Researchers have found that the self serves both an organizational function and an executive function. Self-schemas: organized body of knowledge about the self (e. g. attitudes, preferences, traits) that influences what people notice, think about, and remember about themselves. Self-reference effect: the tendency for people to remember information better if they relate it to themselves.
