Depression is 5 symptoms for two weeks. Exploited by drug companies: came to population by pharmaceutical ads; rates of antidepressants soured. Grief after loss is bereavement: people naturally become extremely sad and look for comfort for others. Same symptoms as depression: can"t tell the difference between people having severe grief during loss of loved one or if they"re just depressed. Uncomplicated = 5 symptoms/2 weeks but not diagnosed as mdd. Either very severe symptom (marked impairment, worthlessness, suicidal, psychotic) or. Reason: seems as if it"s a natural reaction and not mental disorder. Dsm recognized that people get sad when they suffer loss of loved one. Looked at a group of recently bereaved people. What we see is that vast majority of bereaved people after a month has a number of these symptoms of depression. The second thing that you see at 3 months is just a huge decline in the number of symptoms.
