Study of crime in all of its aspects why, what, who, causes/consequences of crime. Must be punishable because plenty of acts that are not treated as crimes. Sutherland talks about white collar crime as not punishable ie; fraud. Nj must have intention for an action to be considered a crime. One must know that actions one is taking can result in a person"s death ie; driving drunk can kill someone. Considered disorderly person"s offense or petty disorderly person"s offense. The constitution gives the right that we are entitled to a jury. Shoplifting does not give a jury therefore not a crime. States have their own standard of felony vs. misdemeanors. Limited by criminal code which changes with time and location. Crime is a violation of social rules of behavior as interpreted and expressed by a criminal legal code created by people holding social and political power . Develop laws of human behaviour that transcends time and place.
