Legitimate means (education, hard work, defer gratification) ---> cultural goals. Illegitimate means (crime) power, wealth*, prestige: society causes most americans to overemphasize the success goals at the expense of the means, overemphasis on cultural goals works to the disadvantage of the lower class. Rebellion - hippies counterculture (60s/70s), vietnam war protests. Rebels & innovators may both do the same crimes, but for very different reasons: legit pursuit of cause vs. crime as illegit, announce dissent vs. remain discreet, challenge goals of society vs. act out of self-interest. Why: b/c kingpins in organized crime achieve wealth, power, prestige w/ illegitimate, b/c crime is profitable, protected, kingpins often respected by law abiding, often bribed police, politicians, hence, organized crime = source for mobility for new immigrant populations. Does everyone stress the ends over the means: ex. Merton also has prob. w/ incomplete culture explain non-utilitarian crimes (ex. murder, aggravated assault, rape). criminal subcultures where crime is defined as prestigious.
