01:830:340 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Null Hypothesis, Response Bias, Scientific Method
Document Summary
Some has dietary practice (cid:3247)3rd variable(cid:3248) The scientific method: select and define the problem. Carefully define - if the conductor"s an expert and such: develop a hypothesis = a testable prediction. Null hypothesis = prediction that there"s no relationship/ effect. Hypo: need well-formed ideas, and solid examples to support. Most realistic one; still need to worry about third variables. Dependent variable = the factor we are trying to predict (depends on the iv) Independent variable = (our predictor) the factor we believe will affect the dependent variable. Operational definition = how we measure our constructs of interest. E. g. response on structured clinical interview = diagnosis. Examine the relationship b/w an iv and a dv as they naturally occur (w/o manipulating it) Group comparison = relationship between membership in a group and another variable. Allows us to establish if iv was present before dv. Religious beliefs as teenager adult mental health. Giving yourself up to a higher power (e. g. christians)
